I have been doing this for about 3 months now and it has been amazing. I have never worked out this consistently before! I have absolutely no reason to not bike, as I can now do my main task in life right now, study, while at 150 bpm🫀, what a blessing!
If you are bored and want to try, get an anki controller, set up your computer across from you on an exercise bike🚵♂️, and go for it. Two boring activities make one interesting one you can do without end, who would have thought!? If you like that setup you can try and get a resistance trainer like the wahoo kickr core.
If you want to go further and are concerned about the durability of the paint on the gears of a bike, you can change out the gearing for a stainless steel one on ebay or something like in the image below:
Setting all this up is a bit challenging though, actually quite a bit challenging. If I were to do it again I would have saved a lot of headache and gone to a bike shop to have them set up the back wheel on the resistance trainer for me from the get-go, as I ended up doing this anyway lol 🤦♂️.
You can then set the trainer up to do variable resistance according to whether you are going up or down hills, drafting other people, etc in zwift, this totally awesome app that is 100% worth the $15 a month or whatever it is. It is incredibly motivating to race against people virtually on there (there are people fro mall over the globe 🌏), and I was a doubter initially as to how much fun that would be. Here is a video of what it is like, and it looks exactly like this when you run the iPad app as the graphics are rather impressive.
