I have tried and believed in both keeping the remaining card counts on the bottom bar and removing them throughout my experience with Anki.Β
It is nice at times to know when you are close to reaching a certain milestone. For example, if you decide to take a break every 100 cards (one of my preferred systems), then you feel motivated when you look down briefly and see that you only have 10 cards to go, for example.
If you find yourself in the situation where you are struggling with anki motivation, it may be unhelpful to think about what card count you have left to do until you are mentally "free." One strategy that can be used in specific situations is to think about how you will just be doing this all day no matter what. This way, if you are behind on your cards or ahead on them, it doesn't matter! It is still before 8pm (your hypothetical cut-off time when you stop working), so trudge on you shall! Thus, in this way, not looking at card counts may be helpful for motivation.Β
This works particularly well with the walking method on a treadmill I have found because I feel like I could walk all day but if I were to sit all day my legs would hurt at some point and I would feel the inevitable slow creep of sitting-death.
